Why Dancing?

How many times have you made a New Year's resolution to lose weight and get in shape only to make the exact same vow a year later (but this time you really mean it)?

As any fitness instructor (and common sense) will tell you, you won't stick with your exercise plan unless you enjoy what you are doing. If you aren't a fan of a particular activity, you'll feel unmotivated; and maybe even like you're being punished. If you enjoy your exercise, you'll feel inspired, empowered and eager to make it a part of your lifestyle, especially when you see and feel the great results of your efforts!

According to the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (US Department of Health & Human Services), healthy adults should participate in weekly aerobic activity totaling 150 minutes at moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes at vigorous-intensity, or an equivalent combination of the two. Exercise totals that exceed these recommendations result in greater improvements in health and fitness.

Did you know that dance is recommended in both the moderate and vigorous activity categories? Dance's physical and emotional benefits have been documented for many years, but did you know that dancing makes you smarter too? A 2006 Cleveland Clinic article states that the amateur ballet dancer "can gain poise, improve posture, balance, and self-discipline, as well as concentration, flexibility, endurance, speed, strength, and power." Recent research by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) showed that ballroom dancing can contribute to health gains and may improve fitness for amateur adult dancers, as measured by heart rates and energy expenditure.
